Chief Jenifer Collins-Brown reports that at 4:16 pm today, North Shore Regional Emergency Communications Center began receiving calls reporting a serious motor vehicle crash on Route 95.  Initial reports were that at least one person was ejected, and CPR was in progress.  Several courageous bystanders immediately rendered assistance to the injured parties and relayed information to the responding apparatus.  Topsfield Fire Captain Brown used that information to request additional resources including two more ambulances and a medical helicopter.  On arrival at the scene, Topsfield Fire Department and Topsfield Police Department personnel began the urgent work of assessing patients and treating the most severely injured first.  Unfortunately, one victim that was ejected was determined to be dead on scene.  Topsfield Fire Department transported one patient to Beverly Hospital with life threatening injuries.  That patient was ultimately flown to Boston Medical Center by Boston Medflight.  Middleton Fire Department transported one person to Lahey Burlington and Atlantic Ambulance transported one person to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.  Both of those patients had significant injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.  It appeared that at least two vehicles were involved and one patient in the second vehicle refused transport to the hospital.  Boxford Fire Department, Danvers Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police and Action Ambulance also assisted Topsfield Fire and Police Departments on the highway.

At the same time, a three-vehicle accident was reported on Route One in Topsfield.  Topsfield Police and Fire Departments responded to Two patients were transported from that accident by Wenham Fire Department and Action Ambulance.

An additional medical call was received in Topsfield at this same time and Topsfield A 2 transported one person from that call to Beverly Hospital.

The Topsfield Fire Department is grateful for members who came back while off duty to assist at these incidents as well as to our mutual aid partners.  The limited crew size of the Topsfield Public Safety Team makes these incidents more challenging.  Our department is extremely grateful for the many people who stopped to render any aid that they could on this horrific scene.  Our thoughts are with everyone involved.
