Information RE Zoning Requirements for MBTA Communities

Below are two helpful documents that provide more information about the State zoning requirements for MBTA communities. 

  1. This 20 page slide deck was created by the Baker-Polito Administration and discusses the housing crisis in Massachusetts and what is beleived to be an opportunity to establish a new paradigm for encouraging multi-family housing production. With the 2021 Economic Development Bill, the Governor signed the multi-family zoning requirement for MBTA communities into law that states in part that, "an MBTA community shall have a zoning ordinance or by-law that provides for at least 1 district of reasonable size in which multi-family housing is permitted as of right;" This document further discusses the language that makes up this requirement.
  2. This 4 page letter with attachments is the response from the Topsfield Select Board and Planning Board Chairs that addresses Topsfield's concerns with the zoning requirements.​​​​​​​
